Beautiful jalisco! Que lindo es Jalisco!

It’s been a while since we wrote last,  a few miles have gone by since. We decided to leave real early the morning we headed for the Mexican border at Tijuana in order to avoid the queues. We arrived at the border crossing about 7am, no cars, no queues, no nothing, fantastic!! We passed the police control, no one stopped us, great!! We were expecting someone to stop us next to get our paperwork but since we heard that some crossings have the immigration separated from the police check by a few metres or sometimes Km we kept going and before we knew  where we were we found ourselves  driving around downtown Tijuana, the one place on the planet we were trying to avoid, especially with no tourist visa for ourselves and with no temporary import permit for our bike. As is the custom here in Mexico there were no road signs to be seen anywhere so ended up lost in Tijuana while trying to find the American border to allow us to start all over again. When  we eventually found the way back to America the queue was aprox 3km long...great. When we got to the check point the Us border guard asked us where were we going and how long were we in Mexico, and he did not find it a bit funny when we told him about our trip to Argentina and that we have been in Mexico for an hour trying to find America and now we are on our way back to Mexico again!!! (hey, some guys don’t have a sense of humour....). To make a long story short we did get our papers sorted the second time around (Dan, you must be proud of us, ha,ha!!).

Off we went for Baja, a 1500Km of dirty hot desert! We rushed on our last day in Baja to catch a ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan (main land Mexico). When we checked on the net it was a 12hour crossing so we thought we would get ourselves a cabin on board to chill out. We were told there was two ferrys available, one of them nicer than the other and they sail every other day. As it turned out we got the other, a cargo ferry and our 12 hour journey turned into a wet and stormy 16 hour crossing. Can’t beat getting woken up out of your sleeping bag at 2am by thunder and lightning and thumping rain on top of you.  So much for chillin out! Stayed in Mazatlan for 2 nights to re-charge our batteries after the hot trip throught Baja. We met a lovely Canadian couple with their son riding 3 bikes to SouthAmerica for a year, hi to Michael, Jing and Sean if you are reading this (...and good news for you: it’s gradually getting cooler and greener over here!).  Also we met Jason, a young  English guy who is doing the same trip as us but with a slight little difference: he’s cycling it!!!! A real adventurer and a great inspiration to us, fair play to you Jason, best of luck!

Now we are in the beautiful region of Jalisco, and as the Mexican song says it’s really beautiful here, pretty towns, wonderful countryside but still no f*****g sign posts to be seen!!!  One thing we have to mention is that after so much bad press on Mexican violence and drug related incidents we have felt really safe and welcomed all along and enjoying every bit of it.

From Bears to Cowboys // Dels ossos als Cowboys

On our way to Monument Valley since the last time we posted we passed down through Utah, a fabolous state full of natural wonders, one of them being the Canyonlands National Park. We decided to stay in Monticello, a small mormon town (...5 minutes into the checking in process in a motel they tried to convert us!!),  from where we did a 4 hour hike to into the National Park.  The walk was absolutely amazing, a pity that we ran out of water of the way back so what it started as an idillic but hot adventure walk between gorges and canyons ended up as something out of the french foreigh legion, all we were missing was some crazy french officer screaming

MARCH OR DIE! to us as we were making our way back to the bike!!  That evening we heard there was a rodeo in town, so we decided to go. We looked like total aliens, everybody in the audience wore cowboy boots and hats, but turn out to be a very enjoyable and entertaining  evening. We also like to say a special hello to Curt and Marta,  a lovely couple who we met in Monticello and we would liked to have spent more time with, and we are sure we will some time in the future.

One day we met a man called John Patrick O’Sullivan, a GS rider who put us in contact with Dan Toporoski, another  GS rider with a load of touring experience who via email gave us a fantastic route through Monument Valley, Glen Canyon, Bryce Canyon all the way to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and through secondary roads and small country towns practically all the way to San Diego, where the landscape changes from trees, mountains and rivers in the north of the country to rocks, cactus and sand dunes here in the south.  It was definetely of the highlights of the trip so far, so thanks to John and specially Dan to take the time out to email us with all the info.

We are now stopped in San Diego where the bike is being serviced and we are getting a break too. Hope to be heading for the Mexico border Saturday or Sunday.  We finally got to meet Dan Toporoski this evening, a true fountain of knowledge of all things Mexican and Guatemalan and very helpful man who is gone out of his way to help us.

And that’s all for now, next time we post it will be from Mexico, so adios  y suerte muchachos!!!

In Yogi Bear land // Al païs del Oso Yogui

Yellowstone. Amazing place, saw some lovely things like the Sulphur Springs and the Old Faithful geyser, which erupts every 90 minutes on the clock.  Loads of deer and buffalo roaming around the park as well as Grizzly bears, who attacked and killed one person here a few days ago. On the negative side it was the worst traffic we had to deal with since we left Vancouver. That’s cause on top of the hundreds of tourist from around the world this is the only time during the year when they can do road  works, so the tailbacks were fenomenal (...for Eva) and headwrecking (...for Trevor).  No wonder why the Grizzly’s are getting more and more agressive having to deal with all this traffic every day!! It was a relief when we got back to the quiet roads down through Wyoming and into Utah, admiring the difference of the landscape as we went along.

Yesterday we were hoping to get accomodation in the town of Jackson, Wyoming, but it was not possible to camp or even to get a room anywhere due to the amount of people coming in or to Yellowstone. We had to keep going to the next town, 60 miles away, in the hopes we get a campsite or a motel. No sooner we had decided this and on our way a thunderstorm came out of nowhere, complete with thunder and lighting, USA style (big, big, BIG!!!). So off we went. Eventually rain stopped and gave way to a spectacular scenery. Was getting late and still did not find anywhere to stay, so decided to pull in to this bar-saloon place on the road in the middle of nowhere full of pics on the walls of local guys with dead bears and dead wolves up on the counter where we now sat to eat our hamburgers,...thinking back...where they really hamburgers??? Got talking to one of the boys in the bar who told us about a possible place to camp just a bit up the road. When we got there drove into a small horse ranch which had set up a hunting camp around the back, complete with outdoor facilities for butchering and cooking the victims (...maybe this is where our burgers came from, organic produce at its best!!). Accomodation turned out to be an antic canvas tent with a little wood stove inside at 5$ per person a night which due to our desperate situation  we were very very happy to take. Now as we are writing this we are in a 50$ motel room in a town called Vernal (Utah) which is like a night in the Ritz Carlton compare to last night.

S’anava fent tard i no trobàvem cap lloc on pasar la nit.

Tomorrow we are heading to Monument Valley. We will post again as soon as we access the net. Thanks again for your comments, much appreciated.

Demà anem cap a Monument Valley.

From Vancouver Island to Montana // De l'illa de Vancouver a Montana

Hi lads, first of all thanks for checking in and for all your encouraging comments, nice to have you along!
After a couple of ferry rides ended up coming into the US through the north of Washington State. After a brief visit to Seattle, we headed for beautiful Mount Rainier National Park. Thanks to the advice of Dennis, a fellow biker we meet at the BMW shop in Seattle we got loads of info on where to go and what to see in Washington State as well as having a good laugh!

Spent a couple of days in and around there, where we saw beautiful snow cap mountains, waterfalls and fantastic thousand year old trees.

The day after we left Mount Rainier we got lost looking for a town called Wallace, ended up seeing some beautiful countryside and lovely little towns. On the advice of some local guys decided to take a 30 mile shortcut ( !) on a gravel road which used to be an old railway line that the locals call Moon Pass. About 6 or 7 miles up the mountain ended up with a flat back tire, with 2 holes, one through the side and one out the back!!! Plugged the 2 holes ourselves and with the help of 3 locals guys that happen to come along on their pickup truck  took Eva and all the gear to Wallace and Trevor managed to drive the bike to town and get the tire replaced.

Can’t believe how friendly and helpful people has been to us here since we arrived in this country.  As we are writing this we are in Montana, real cowboy country, in a town called Ennis (…loads of Irish names and place names here).  Tomorrow we are heading for Yellowstone National Park. More to follow…..
